BLW,
Three years in the hobby now...I learned with a 72, currently have two 100's, three 180's, a 91, and a 150. All great engines...should have a number?

Thanks for the suggestion. I have not used Omega fuel as I'm satisfied with the power of the Cool Power 30% heli. What I plan to do is put 2 ounces of castor oil in the gallon of fuel.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
I use spinner nuts on all my Saito engines. The Harry Higley product comes in both heavy duty brass and light aluminum, depending on the weight requirements and balance of you plane. They also make spacer nuts that will take care of your problem. These nuts are nice and work real well. I have given up on plastic spinners as they fail too often and the big aluminum spinners are expensive and require adapters. Dubro also makes a spinner nut that is conical shaped and looks good on the plane. I put this on my Saito 91 and it looks nice and fuctions well. Also, you should change your electric starter insert to one that is made for a spinner nut. While this is an additional cost, in the long run you'll be glad you did it because the insert will grip the spinner nut much better, make it easier to start and is safer.

I removed the carburator on my FA-82 and noticed some type of orange sealant has been used in addition to the "o" ring at the intake manifold. What is it, and is it necessary?
Thanks

Fuel question for you fellas..
Have a new Saito 125 (first 4 stroke).. My LHS sells Byron Fuel.. Bought a few gallons of "Traditional Sport Premium?" I think it was called.. Anyway, it was 20 percent oil and 10 percent nitro.. Advertised as a blend of castor and synthetic.. will this fuel be good a least for breaking in? The hobby shop dude tried to talk me into a lower oil content, but the Saito manual is pretty clear on using at least 20 percent.. I'm not sure how much castor is in this fuel and Byron doesn't seem to respond to email.. (chumps).. Anyway, thanks for your opinions!
John..

I have never seen any orange sealant from the factory on any of my Saitos.

I think the fuel you bought will be fine. I haven't used Byron's, but I have never heard anything bad about it.

It looks like RTV but i'm not sure, I thought I read an earlier post from Bill Robinson that mentioned sealing the intake manifold but he could of been talking about something else.
Maybe I should order a new "O" ring and gasket, what do you think?

If it isn't leaking, why "fix" it? Naturally, a new O ring and gasket won't hurt anything.
It is possible that someone used RTV sealant in that area, trying to prevent a potential problem.
Some of the earlier plastic backplates were prone to warpage and loosening, and causing a leak in that critical manifold connection to the cylinder. You can tell if your backplate is one of those with that potential by checking it against these two photos. (originally posted by the late Bill Robinson, IIRC) The second one is the one you want. It has reinforcing ribs where the carb mounts to it, and it works well.
Look at where the carb bolts onto your backing plate, and see if you have the two little ribs that you see in the second photo. If you don't, you might want to get a new backplate. http://www.horizonhobby.com/Products...rodID=SAI7217A
On the other hand, if you don't have a leak, this is all much ado about nothing!

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Thanks for the reply although i'm new to this site and to Saito, I just love the motors. Having read so much on this thread that was posted by Bill Robinson I just assumed he was still around, Sorry. I checked the back plate, and it is the improved version. I guess now I just wonder why the RTV was there and if I should use it again. Maybe a little extra protection couldn't hurt. By the way should there be any kind of a seal or gasket where the backplate meets the case?

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
EVERYONE here misses Bill Robinson. I didn't know him well, as many on this board did, but his writings made me FEEL like I know him. We exchanged a few emails and PM's, but not that much.
There is no gasket between the rear cover and the crankcase on the 82. I don't blame you for being surprised by that - I was too! Other Saitos with metal rear covers DO have a gasket in this area. I suppose the plastic cover seals well enough without it.
I doubt the RTV sealant could hurt anything, except perhaps the looks.

1rc, some guys are paranoid and put the stuff everywhere, it's rarely actually needed, folks just need to relax, run their engines and enjoy them. 99.99% of engine troubles are the the needle settings not mechanical faults.

RE: Welcome to Club SAITO !
Hey guys,
I just stumbled across this thread and have to say that there is a huge amont of info to be found here (glad I found it). I just picked up a Saito FA100 that is destined for my 84" Cub (under construction). This is my first Saito engine so I'll *humbly* ask for admission to the club.
I'll be breaking in this little gem soon and can hardly wait to get it in my plane. Thanks for all of the great info!
Cheers! BH
