I recently acquired a Dumas American Enterprise Kit #1213. The kit has been around for a while, in fact it had an original receipt in the box dated April 1984. In looking over the instructions I couldn't help but notice that they are quite sparse compared to the instructions in new kits. (I am presently building a Typhoon that includes a multi-page booklet and a photo sheet). My question is: has Dumas updated the building instructions for this kit to give a more detailed guide for building? If so, is there anyone out there that might have a copy they could get to me with the updated information?

Contact Dumas Products. The Enterprise is still in production. The plans and instructions can be purchased for under $10.00 I would be surprised if the directions changed one word!

I know this post is over 16 years old but I just started this project. When you put the panels on the hull did you soak them?

Not normally. The 1/16th ply normally is flexible enough to go around the compound curves in the hull

As long as they're general questions, I should be able to answer them. IF, however, you're looking for something specific about the boat, it becomes a bit problematic. I primarily build sport and scale wood hulled hydroplanes so much of what it takes to build the Enterprise is similar. Here's a link to a shot of one of the boats I built:

Do you fiberglass the whole boat?
what brand of wood filler do you use?

With the Enterprise, I would glass it with a layer, two at most, with the thinnest FG cloth you can find. I would use epoxy instead of the normal polyester resin as a binding agent as well. As far as what I use for filler, I keep it simple. I use West Systems epoxy for everything, including filler. To use it as a filler, I mix in silica fibers if it's in a structural strength area and micro balloons if it's cosmetic.
When it comes to my boats, I have to look at keeping them light. Since I race them, I just put a thin coat of epoxy on all the framing and skin, inside and out. Primer and paint goes over that, then decals and, lastly, everything is covered with clearcoat to seal everything.

Did you glass the entire boat or paint some areas? I painted using spray paint and don't like how the grains of the plywood show. I am thinking of using regular paint hopping it will be think enough to hide the grains

Spray painting over bare plywood will raise the grain. That is why I seal my boats with epoxy first. It keeps water and paint out of the wood and prevents the grain from from showing through under the paint. I don't use FG on my race boats as it adds an unacceptable amount of weight to the boat. You have to remember, I build boats to race so lightness if required. The Enterprise is, by comparison, a boat that needs to be stable so adding FG is actually beneficial

i dont plan on putting the boat in the water but want to gloss finish on the hull. thanks again for the advise.
